Nobody relishes the thought of having a scar on their body that is going to stay with them for life and stretch marks are some of the most common causes or examples of scarring in women. Whilst they do slowly diminish over time, stretch marks rarely disappear completely and what starts off looking a purplish colour will eventually fade. There are a few techniques and methods that can be used in order to reduce their chances of occurring and also to help speed up the fading process. From the use of bio oil to remaining hydrated, here are a few things that can be tried both during and after pregnancy to help avoid stretch marks across the stomach, breasts and thighs.

Nourishment

Providing your body with the proper nourishment should never be underestimated, especially during pregnancy. Not only is it essential for the healthy development of the baby, but it can also help your skin to stay as elastic as possible and therefore avoid the appearance of stretch marks. Food to be particularly aware of include those that are rich in anti-oxidants (such as spinach, blueberries and strawberries), Vitamin E (such as seeds, nuts, avocado and broccoli), Vitamin A (such as carrots and squash) and Omega-3 (such as eggs, fish and walnuts.)

Water

Water is essential in order to keep the skin well hydrated and as elastic as possible. It also helps to flush the harmful toxins out of the body and promotes the health of the skin. Drink as many glasses of water each day as you can and supplement this with herbal teas and lots of fruit. Don’t forget that light exercise is important during pregnancy and you will need to drink even more water if you are sweating a lot.

Bio Oil

Using bio oil to moisturise the skin will help to hydrate it and keep it flexible for as long as possible. The more elastic it is the better it will be able to stretch around your growing belly. Bio oil has been found by many to be the most effective, both as a preventative measure before stretch marks and also afterwards to help reduce them. Other types of scarring can also be reduced somewhat using this method.

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing help to remove the dead skin cells and promotes the growth of new, healthier ones. It also promotes good circulation, which is important for healthy skin. This can be achieved by brushing in circular motions, starting at the feet and working towards the heart.
